Our block of wood is made from Basswood. This wood is used
for wood carving and is the perfect choice for Pinewood Derby® Cars. It is easy
to saw, file, carve and sand. The subtle grain pattern of the wood allows paint
to go on evenly.
The half-round cut out on the bottom of the Pinewood Derby®
block hold the dowels that act as the axles. These axle cut-outs are always
parallel to each other. Each axle is a 2” long dowel that has a hole in each
end for the screws. These dowels are specially made for the S&W Crafts Pinewood
Racer.
S&W Crafts has always used high-quality screws to hold
on the wheels. The screws have no knicks or burrs on the shanks and there is
nothing to file off under the heads of the screws. The screws have a
zinc-chromate plating and require very little polishing. They allow a Pinewood
Derby Car to be "fine tuned" for racing.
The wheels of our Pinewood Racer are made of high-impact
plastic and are virtually unbreakable. The hole in the center of the wheel
where the screw is inserted is very smooth.
The combination of soft wood blocks, tunable axles and
virtually unbreakable wheels make for the best Pinewood Derby Car on the
market!
For most children, a Pinewood Derby® Car is the first time
they have done any woodworking at all. For most adults helping a child (read
that last part twice!), making a Pinewood Derby® Car is the first time since
7th grade that the adult has done any woodworking.
Having quality wood and strong tunable axle assembles makes
the Derby more
enjoyable for the child and the adult helping the child.
Our cars are the official Ranger Derby cars. Cub
Scouts, Awana’s, (Y Guides, Adventure Guides), many County Parks
and Recreation departments, corporate Pinewood Derby and various youth
organizations across the country and the world use our cars.
Note: We no longer cut a dado into the top of the block. An updated picture is being processed.
Note #2: We include one instruction sheet for each 10 Racers. If you need more, let us know.
