SST Sleek Slim & Trim. The body of the SST is
about the same width as the original Racers made in the 1950's and 60's, around
1 1/4". And the thickness of the body is about half the thickness of
a regular Racer, around 5/8" thick. The symmetrical profile looks really fast*. The Racer is so
light that it comes with our 3.5 .oz weight, and an extra 1/2 .oz of
copper coated steel BB's. We have drilled holes in the body for the BB's. Each
BB weighs 1/88 of an ounce. Just put BB's in the holes to bring the Racer to
the maximum weight, then, screw the car weight to the bottom to cover the
holes.
*Will this Racer be faster than another racer that is
larger? No one knows. Fast Racers take time and patience. Polishing all parts,
wheel alignment, lubrication, and a bit of luck.
Our SST is cut with tools most people don’t own. Table saw,
radial arm saw, band saw. Now you can spend more time with a child finishing
the Racer.
Pictures
First and
second pictures: Everything you get in the kit. Third picture: A Pinewood Racer
from the early 1960’s, next to our SST. Look carefully at the side of the
old Racer, you will see the signature of “Don Murphy”. I brought that Racer with me to the 50th
anniversary of the first Pinewood Derby, May 15, 2003. Don, who created
Pinewood Derby, gladly signed my Racer when I asked.
The fourth
picture shows the progression from a full size block to the SST. Note the holes for
the BB's.
